Book drive and supply drive underway through Academic Support Office

By Erika Neldner

Year after year, the Academic Support Office and African Descendants Student Association helps people in need through a variety of fundraising drives. This academic year is no different, and ASO director Tunji Adesesan has announced two opportunities for the Reinhardt family and community at large to help give back.

The African Descendants Student Association is holding a book drive as part of Afrika Reads, an international outreach program spearheaded by the student group. At the end of spring semester 2017, Reinhardt University shipped more than 7,000 books to Nigeria. Books went to the University of Ilorin, a public institution in Nigeria, and two private universities, Crownhill University and Afe Bablola University.

“This program has served students in Nigeria well, and I am thrilled at how much it has grown. This is the sixth year we have collected books, and our goal this year is to collect even more than last year,” Adesesan said.

Book donation boxes are located in most of the major buildings on campus, Adesesan said.

In addition to the book drive, Adesesan said a food and supplies drive is being held for Reinhardt University international students.

“The food/needs pantry is an idea that came from the last meeting we had with international students,” Adesesan said. “The students maintained that the distance from Waleska to major grocery stores in Canton makes it difficult for them to get groceries and other essentials they need; hence, the need for the food/needs pantry.”

International students also run into issues with the length of time it takes to get money from their home countries.

“They also maintained that sometimes they run out of funds since they have to wait for money to be sent to them from their various countries,” Adesesan said. “Therefore, it would be nice for them to have a place to go when there is a need for food or other items.”

Adesesan said the need is for hygiene products and non-perishable food items. Donation boxes are in the Academic Support Office located in the basement of the Lawson building.

Last academic year, Reinhardt University sent 14 pallets of books to Africa through the Afrika Reads program.
