Georgia History Timeline 2009
Annual School Field Trip Event
This school field trip event allows students to learn through "living history" interpreters as students visit various re-enactors who portray historic characters.
The 2009 event was a great success. It is held for three days each October and teachers begin making reservations early in order to reserve the best day and time for their class to attend this one-of-a-kind history program. Two days are reserved for students in the second through fourth grades and one day is reserved for fifth through eighth grades.
Our 2009 program featured Jim Sawgrass, a well know Creek interpreter who explained what life was like before the European discovery. They also saw Sequoyah who developed the first Cherokee writing and Turtle Woman. A Cherokee man and wife talked about the removal of the Cherokee Indians and the "Trail of Tears" and Red-coated General Oglethorpe discussed the English plans for a new colony of Georgia. Pioneers demonstrated their crafts and skills that enabled them to survive in Georgia's mountain wilderness. On Friday, Abraham Lincoln and Civil War soldiers gave the student's a glimpse of why men fought and how it affected everyone's life in North Georgia.
The event is held in the Appalachian Settlement where a woodworker and a blacksmith demonstrate their skills and ladies dressed in pioneer clothing discuss life on the Georgia frontier. Students are welcomed into an authentic log cabin and the smells of food cooking on an open hearth fill the air.

Admission for the program is $10 per student and adult. One adult per 20 students is free with a minimum of 20 students. Call 770-720-5967 for information and reservations.
This is a rain or shine event held in the Appalachian Settlement. Picnic tables are available near bus driveway.
