Award-winners Announced in 10th Annual Juried Art Competition
Works by 44 local artists are currently on display in Reinhardt College's William W. Fincher Jr. and Eunice L. Fincher Visual Arts Center as part of the 10th Annual Cherokee County Open Juried Art Competition, and 13 of those artists were honored with an award Tuesday evening, March 20, 2001, at the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony.
Artists and their awards include: Sarah McAdoo of Talking Rock - First Place for "The Healer"; Carol Brady of Ellijay - Second Place for "Table"; Curtis Chapman of Canton - third Place for "On The Beach"; Kendrick Shackleford II of Acworth - Dick Blick Award for "Teeth"; Harry Hunt of Waleska - Cherokee County Arts Council Award for "Hour Glass"; Lou Macknik of Canton - Reinhardt Award for "Guacomole & Walnut"; and Sarah Scohier of Woodstock - Special Award for "Wills Park".
Honorable Mention was awarded to Eric Flint of Waleska for "Butterfly"; Connie Thomas of Talking Rock for "Corine"; Alice Lear of Jasper for "Titan"; Barbara Scouten of Gainesville for "Paye Road Daisies"; Mary Jo Yales of Woodstock for "Olympics 2016"; and Carol Massey of Big Canoe for "Siren's Sleep".
Shorter College Assistant Professor of Art Brian Taylor served as juror for this year's competition. "I chose work that is reaching to achieve a balance between the utilization of visual dynamics (design elements) and the communication of idea," he said. "Media and meaning working as a unified whole is an important standard of achievement to be strived for and honored. I congratulate the artists in the exhibition for the quality of achievement presented."
The Cherokee County Juried Art Competition offers local visual artists an opportunity to exhibit and compete with other artists. This annual effort of the Visual Arts League and Reinhardt College is intended to promote and recognize area arts and artists.
Contributers to the competition include Cherokee County Visual Arts League, Reinhardt College, Cherokee County Arts Council, Dick Blick, Folks Restaurant of Woodstock and Towne Cleaners of Woodstock.
The exhibit will be on display through April 6, 2001. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
