Artwork completed by students from the
Mountainbrook Comprehensive Academy in Waleska, Ga., was on display at
Reinhardt College from Nov. 10 through 14, 2003 on the third
floor of the Fred H. and Mozelle Bate Tarpley Education Center. The show
is being hosted by Reinhardt's Price School of Education and is open to
the public free of charge.
Associate Professor of Education
Harriett A. Lindsey worked with Dian Stevenson, the creative therapies
instructor, from Mountainbrook Comprehensive Academy, to arrange the
exhibit of 40 pieces completed by students age 6 to 13. A similar event was held in November of 2001, and both groups of students really enjoyed the interaction.
Lindsey said Stevenson asked the
College to get involved because the receptions and show gives the
students a chance to exhibit their art outside their school.
Stevenson uses art and writing to help the
school's special needs students express their feelings and better
understand themselves. "We use art to express feelings and
emotions," Stevenson said, "and this show is a way of giving our
students a true sense of accomplishment, of success. Also, it is a way that our students can make a healthy contribution to the community."
"The Reinhardt education students are very excited about this," Lindsey said. "Also the elementary and middle school students get to experience being on a college campus and enjoy meeting our students."
Lindsey said the Reinhardt students benefit
from interacting with the Mountainbrook children and parents and
learning about them and their art.
