Almost doubling the amount raised in 2005, the
student organizers of the Patricia A. Burris Walk Against Breast
Cancer announced Friday a total of $11,000 raised during the
walk on March 24. The walk was originated in 2005 as a service
project among Reinhardt student organizations and named for a
student’s mother who passed away after battling breast cancer.
The proceeds raised will go toward research efforts at the
Winship Cancer Institute at Emory in Atlanta.
“I’m very proud of the group of students who
planned and executed the walk. If it weren’t for the dedication
of our committee and the generosity of everyone who donates, we
would have never made it this far,” said Jessica Burris,
daughter of the walk’s namesake and the 2005 walk chairman.
Burris is 2005 graduate and currently an admissions counselor at
Reinhardt.
Katie Carmichael, a Reinhardt junior,
chaired the walk this year along with a committee of students
and staff members at the Waleska-based College.
“To be able to raise $11,000 is such an
achievement for us as a committee. We want this walk to be a
continuing effort at Reinhardt, and to have this success in our
second year is such a boost,” Carmicheal said.
The walk itself was a 16-hour relay event
with team of 6-10 people walking around the clock. Student
organizations at the College did a variety of projects to raise
money for their collective teams. Everything from snacks to
t-shirts to water bottles and pink roses were sold during the
walk.
“It’s like a big slumber party, but we all
keep the bigger picture in mind,” said Carmichael. |
