Reinhardt College in
Waleska and Alpharetta, Ga., has extended the welcome mat to college
students from the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast. Reinhardt President Dr. J.
Thomas Isherwood said up to 10 students displaced from impacted colleges and
universities in Louisiana and Mississippi will be accepted tuition-free for
fall semester.
“It is our desire to extend a truly warm welcome to these displaced students,” Isherwood said. “These young men and women and their families have been through so much pain and loss, and we hope to offer a safe haven, a sense of normalcy and continuity, so they can continue to pursue their degrees as their home institutions prepare to welcome them back. nearby community, we are eager to work with them and make their enrollment as transient students as easy as possible.” The American Council on Education, ACE, lists 28 colleges and universities that have been affected by the storm. ACE estimates that as many as 100,000 students may have been impacted. Fall semester at Reinhardt began August 22 so interested students are encouraged to act promptly. Day classes are already three weeks into the 16-week session, but the 8-week evening sessions offer another easy entry point; the next evening term begins October 17. Isherwood promises that every effort will be made by faculty and staff to help new students catch up on class work at either site. “While our main campus in Waleska is more traditional with residence halls, a full slate of day classes and a more limited number of evening offerings, our North Fulton Center in Alpharetta focuses on evening and weekend courses targeted toward working adults,” he said. “We will do our best to help any new students settle in, whether they are enrolled with us full- or part-time, and whether they live on our campus or commute.” Interested students must have documentation of their acceptance or registration at one of the affected colleges along the Gulf Coast. For information about Reinhardt’s opportunity, students or parents can contact Reinhardt at 770-720-5526 or 1-87-reinhardt or by e-mail at admissions@reinhardt.edu. With an enrollment of more than 1000 students, Reinhardt College is a four-year liberal arts institution. Affiliated with The United Methodist Church, Reinhardt offers 33 programs of study ranging from business, communications and education to liberal arts, psychology and music. Since its founding in 1883, the institution has focused on being “the way college should be” by meeting student needs one student at a time.
