and Volunteers |
|
The Tipton-Smith family of Waleska, Ga., will be featured on
ABC-TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on March 4, 2007.
Reinhardt College has set up a scholarship fund to provide
assistance to the two
daughters in the family, and several students groups have
already volunteered, while more are headed that way as the
project unfolds.
Students and staff pictured at left volunteered for the
kick-off activities on Saturday, Jan. 13. A number of alumni
were also part of the project.

"We at Reinhardt are excited to have the opportunity to offer
scholarships to Missy Tipton and Emily Smith,” said Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood,
Reinhardt's president. “We value our close ties with the local
community and are glad to be asked to be a part of the ‘Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition’ experience.”
Vice President of Institutional Advancement and External
Affairs JoEllen Wilson announced Tuesday, Jan. 16 that a new
Reinhardt Scholarship fund: The Alex Yurewich and Ransom Tipton
Memorial Scholarship Fund, had been created to assist the
Tipton-Smiths and the Yurewichs, another family with close ties
to the College who was impacted by the same tragic car accident.
"Alex and Ransom are the two young men who passed away in a car
wreck at Lake Arrowhead. To many of you Alex was a familiar
face. The son of one of our own, Elaine Yurewich, who has worked
in Reinhardt's bookstore for many years, Alex grew up on our
Waleska campus. He introduced us to the art of excellent
skateboarding, which he practiced many hours while waiting for
his mother to finish her duties," Wilson said.
The first recipients of this new Scholarship fund will be Elaine
Yurewich and her daughter and the Tipton-Smith sisters, Wilson
said. Plans are being made to announce this special fund as part
of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition television show.
Wilson welcomes donations to the College to assist with the
creation of this new fund. Gifts should be made out to
Reinhardt College and marked for the "Alex Yurewich and Ransom
Tipton Memorial Scholarship." A webpage specifically for
this fund is in development.

Reinhardt Volunteers Get
Involved
The campus, only about 15 minutes from the work site, has
been kept buzzing with questions about volunteers and about the project. College-wide e-mails and flyers
have encouraged students, faculty and staff to get involved, and
e-mails have been sent to alumni, trustees, and other groups
associated with Reinhardt to make them aware of the opportunity.
“I think this is so great,” said Cassie Chastain, Reinhardt
senior. “A bunch of my friends and I are making plans to help
out. It’ll be fun, and it’ll be great to help make a
difference.”
The College switchboard has gotten even busier because of the
news. “Our phones have been ringing with folks looking for
information about volunteering. This is so exciting,” said Jean
Champion, one of people answering telephone calls to the main
college number.

Background on the Building
Project
More information about the family and the build, and a map to
the site, is available at

Here’s a quick overview:
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, a show that runs each Sunday at
8 p.m. on ABC, is building out the Tipton-Smith home in Lake
Arrowhead, a community just north of Waleska,Ga. On the show
every week they feature a deserving family. On March 4th, the
show will feature the Tipton-Smiths, and the build will begin
this Saturday, Jan. 13.
About the family - In 2005 their home in Lake Arrowhead was
destroyed by fire. Soon thereafter, Faith, her two daughters and
her son, Ransom, selected a house plan that was to become their
dream home. Three months into construction, Ransom and his
sister Missy were in a car accident that took Ransom's life. Due
to massive hospital bills, construction of the home had to stop.
Then a hazardous mold problem developed in the work that had
been done. With the help of Oakwood Homes, its building partners
and RBC Centura Bank the Tipton-Smith's home will be finished
and landscaped by Thursday, Jan. 18.
