Reinhardt College junior Stephen Long, a
music education major from Blairsville, Ga., was recently named
president for the Georgia chapter of the Collegiate Music
Educators’ National Conference, which is one of the largest
music educators associations in the country. It marks the fourth
consecutive year that the Eulene Holmes Murray Department of
Music has produced a state officer and third time that the
president of the organization has been a Reinhardt student. As
president, Long succeeds Mark Adams, who earned his diploma in
music education from Reinhardt in December 2006 and is currently
teaching at an elementary school in Fulton County. The Georgia
Music Educators Association’s student organization is a state
affiliate of CMENC, the National Association of Music Education.
“It’s very exciting and a great honor to be
elected by my peers at other institutions across the state,”
Long said. “It came as a shock to be elected for the position.
One of my big goals is to increase membership by 10 percent, and
to increase the visibility of the organization, as well.”
Long was chosen as president of the Georgia
Chapter, which includes 29 active colleges and universities
around the state, over two candidates from Columbus State
University. He has been very active on Reinhardt’s Waleska
campus, especially within the music department. Long, who has
played the trombone for about 10 years, has taken part in many
of the College’s ensembles and currently serves as a student
orientation coordinator for programs and services. Recently, he
helped form a jazz quartet called “RC Xpress” consisting of
Reinhardt students.
Long also received much praise from Dr.
David Gregory, Reinhardt associate professor of music, who said,
“Stephen is an exceptional young man with musical, academic and
leadership skills that place him in a unique position at this
point in his career. His ability to relate to his peers, offer
counsel to them, organize and carry out local- and state-level
projects, and demonstrate vision for his local chapter of CMENC
has brought him to the highest level of student leadership in
the Georgia Music Educators Association. His work next year on
behalf of the collegiate music programs throughout Georgia will
be significant, and his personal leadership qualities are such
that others will be inspired and motivated toward excellence
through his efforts. It is a pleasure for me to have the
opportunity to work with Stephen.” |
