Reinhardt College Assistant Professor of
Physics Dr. G. David Moore recently was honored with the annual
Vulcan Materials Company Teaching Excellence Award. Moore
received the prestigious award for 2006-07 at Reinhardt’s 123rd
commencement on May 5, 2007.
Vulcan’s Southeast Division has sponsored
the teaching excellence award since the early 1990s through the
Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges, Inc. The award is
presented to a faculty member at each of the GFIC’s 25-member
institutions, in recognition of outstanding contributions to
undergraduate education, student learning, and campus life.
“I was absolutely taken aback,
flabbergasted,” Moore said. “This is my third year at the
College, and it had been a long time since I had taught college.
I spent 30 years in business and then retired.
“Late in life, to get recognition like this
from peers is terrific, absolutely terrific. I’ve had peer
recognition in my previous careers, but this was totally
unexpected.”
Moore teaches physics and astronomy courses
at Reinhardt and for the second straight year is preparing to
take a group of students, as part of one class, on a trip to the
National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, W.Va. While
there from May 13-19, students will have access to the Robert C.
Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable
radio telescope. Named after a United States senator from West
Virginia, the telescope is considered one of the world’s premier
astronomical instruments.
After earning bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in his hometown from the University of Missouri-Kansas
City, Moore obtained his doctorate at the University of
Missouri-Columbia. He now resides in Cumming, Ga. |
