On Saturday,
Feb. 24, 2007, successful science students from Cherokee,
Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Murray and Pickens counties
will gather on the Main Campus of Reinhardt College in Waleska,
Ga., for the fifth annual Reinhardt Regional Science and
Engineering Fair. Science lovers are invited to check out the
projects from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Hill Freeman Library and
Spruill Learning Center, and the awards ceremony will be from 2
to 3 p.m. in the W. Frank and Evelyn J. Gordy Center.
The participating experiments and exhibits were first-place
winners in the preliminary county-wide fairs. The first-place
winners in each category from the February 24 fair will be
eligible to compete in the state-wide Georgia Science and
Engineering Fair, GSEF, March 28 - 31, 2007, at The University
of Georgia, Athens, Ga.
Andy Edwards, Reinhardt dean of the School of
Mathematics and Sciences and the College’s Fair Coordinator,
said Reinhardt was glad to have the opportunity to again host
the event. “Having so many young people on our campus who are
fired up about science is exciting,” he said.
Carol Mudd, the regional fair director and
Cherokee County School District curriculum supervisor, said this
type event teaches the participants many things.
“Just as the Reinhardt
Regional Fair has grown over the past five years, so has the
quality of the projects we receive from the seven counties,”
Mudd said. “The best part of the day is when the students are
interviewed by the judges. The students love talking about
their projects and showing what they know, and the judges love
having the opportunity to interact with the students.”
GSEF is a year-long process of science learning
and research. Students learn to isolate important problems and
to attack and solve problems within the framework of organized,
logical thought and study. Sixty-one projects completed by 76
students were entered in the regional fair last year, and Mudd
and Edwards expect the number of entrants to continue to
increase.
The 17 project categories include: Animal Sciences, Behavioral
& Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Cellular & Molecular Biology,
Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Engineering:
Materials & Bioengineering, Engineering: Electrical and
Mechanical, Energy & Transportation, Environmental Analysis,
Environmental Analysis, Environmental Management, Mathematical
Sciences, Medicine & Health, Microbiology, Physics & Astronomy,
and Plant Sciences. Judges will assess each entrant’s creative
ability, scientific thought or engineering goals, thoroughness,
skills, and clarity/knowledge. First, second and third-place
winners, as well as honorable mention prizes, will be awarded.
First place winners receive savings bonds.
