Reinhardt College invites the community to enjoy
events commemorating Black History Month on the Waleska campus
during February 2007. The varied offerings will showcase the
rich history and cultural heritage of African Americans in “The
Blue & Gray in Black & White” - a concert of Civil War music and
history on February 1; Dining with Historic Soul, which
celebrates African-American contributions to American music, on
February 13; and Intensity Game Show on February 23, 2007.
Reinhardt
Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities
Walter P. May describes the events as a “full slate.” “Black
History Month will remind us of the past, as well as encourage
us for the future,” May said. “These activities will inspire,
entertain and educate. I know the community, as well as our
students, faculty and staff, will enjoy taking part.”
In “The Blue &
Gray in Black & White,” James “Sparky” Rucker and Rhonda Rucker
tell Civil War stories through music and narrative. Some stories
are humorous; others are sad. Mr. Rucker, a former public school
teacher, weaves music into captivating stories that the history
books don’t always tell. A leading folklorist and author, he has
been singing songs and telling stories for more than 40 years.
Ms. Rucker began taking piano lessons from a ragtime player at
age 4. She also adds sweet-sounding vocal harmonies, a mean,
gutsy blues harmonica, old-time banjo and rhythmic bones to the
memorable presentation. The program begins at 8 p.m. in the
Falany Performing Arts Center on February 1. Tickets are $17
for adults; and $12 for seniors (55 and older) and children (age
12 and younger). For tickets, call the Falany Performing Arts
Center box office at (770) 720-9167, or visit www.reinhardt.edu/fpac.
Dining with
Historic Soul begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Gordy Center on
February 13. This rollicking musical adventure starts with the
sophisticated sounds of jazz. Then audiences remember the humor
in American music through the blues. In the origins of Rock and
Roll, audiences will celebrate the musical genius of Little
Richard, Chuck Berry and Ray Charles. Up next are rhythm and
blues, Motown, and disco. Persons interested in dining in the
Gordy Center during this special event will pay a nominal fee of
$5 per person (children 6-12 years old pay $4.50). For more
information, call the Office of Student Activities at
770-720-5540.
The Intensity
Game Show on February 23 will test participants' knowledge of
African and African-American trivia. Full audience
participation is expected. The event begins at 9 p.m. in the
Falany Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. For more
information, call the Office of Student Activities at
770-720-5540.
