The Glasshouse, a spacious meeting room and atrium in The Hasty
Student Life Center at the College's Waleska, Ga. campus, was dedicated
to the late Jewell Wyatt Bannister '40, an alumna and donor to the
College, during a reception on March 12, 2008. The program included
remarks from Bannister's nephew and Reinhardt Trustee Chair William G.
Hasty Jr. '67, Student Government Association President William "Billy"
Jones, and College President Dr. J Thomas Isherwood. Those in attendance
included Bannister's relatives, alumni, students, trustees, faculty and
staff.
"She [Bannister] always had such high regards for
Reinhardt," explained Hasty. "She was so proud that my family has been
so actively involved at Reinhardt.Even though she
attended the College many years ago, I know she would be so honored that
her contributions went to adding to the beauty of this building and
campus."
Making a Commitment to the College Bannister
played on the basketball team at Reinhardt and graduated in 1940 with
an Associate of Arts. She taught high school in the Georgia school
system and retired after many years of service. She passed away in 2006,
and bequeathed funds from her estate for the construction of The Hasty
Student Life Center.
"As an educator, she no doubt knew how to engage students and
how to create a challenging and caring environment which is an element
one can find in this facility that now bears her name," said Jones. "And
on behalf of the student body, I would like to extend our sincere
appreciation to Mrs. Jewell Wyatt Bannister for her commitment to the
students of Reinhardt College."
Serving as a Space for Relaxing and Interacting The
Jewell Wyatt Bannister '40 Glasshouse serves as an area for students to
relax, interact and engage. The space has already been actively used
for meetings, workshops and student activities, and is home to the
student-led worship service, Real Deal, every Wednesday night.
"The
Hasty Student Life Center is the center of campus activity," said Dr.
Isherwood. "But the Jewell Wyatt Bannister ['40] Glasshouse is the
center of the center. It is where it is all happening." Return to Previous Page
