Fourth Annual Breast Cancer Walk
at Reinhardt College Raises More Than $7200 |
|
The fourth annual Patricia A. Burris Walk Against Breast Cancer
was a huge success with participants raising more than $7200 for
the cause. The all-night event was held on the Waleska, Ga.,
campus March 28-29. In the four-year history of the walk, the
effort has raised more than $33,000 for cancer research. The
proceeds go to Emory University Hospital’s Winship Cancer
Institute in Atlanta.
Organized by the Reinhardt Breast Cancer
Committee, the walk originated in 2005 as a service project
among Reinhardt’s student organizations. Heading up the
committee this year were co-chairs Angela Durham, a junior from
Bellville, Ga., and Katie Carmichael, a senior from Acworth,
Ga. Both students have a personal connection to the effort as
both have had family members who won and those who lost the
battle against cancer.
“Cancer Has Touched My Life”
“I wanted to be a part of the walk because cancer is something
that has touched and impacted my life,” explained

Durham. “My mom died from ovarian cancer during
my freshmen year in high school. Cancer is something that needs
to be cured, and if we are able to raise money for the cause, it
may one day help to find the cure.”
“I’ve had two grandparents with cancer, one with
breast cancer and one with prostate cancer,” Carmichael said.
“Also, my godmother, who passed away two years ago, she had
breast cancer, so I have a deep connection with this cause.”
"We Would Have Never Made it This Far"
The annual event is named
for a former student’s mother who passed away after battling
breast cancer. Now an alumna, Jessica Burris ’05 works in
Reinhardt’s admissions office and serves as an advisor to the
Breast Cancer Committee and supporter of the event.
“I am very proud of the group of students who
planned and executed the walk,” said Burris. “If it weren’t for
the dedication of our committee and the generosity of everyone
who donates, we would have never made it this far.”
Surpassing the Donation Goal
The event, which began at 6 p.m. on Friday and
concluded Saturday at 8 a.m., had approximately 180 participants
around the clock. Teams of students, alumni, faculty and staff
collected donations prior to the event, but also sold items from
raffle tickets and baked goods to decorated cups, water bottles
and t-shirts before and during the walk to raise money. The
walkers were treated to live music, indoor and outdoor games,
contests, awards and prizes.
“The activities during
the walk this year were a blast,” said Durham. “Along with the
walking, we played freeze tag and ultimate Frisbee, sang karaoke
and danced. We had so much fun, and at the same time, we were
able to surpass our donation goal.”
“We
Can't Wait to Thank Emory”
“In the next couple of weeks, we will personally
go to Emory and present a check for the total amount of money we
raised,” she said. “We can’t wait to thank the organization for
all their efforts in working towards finding a cure for cancer.” |
