Annual Patricia A. Burris Walk Against Breast Cancer March 28 &
29 at Reinhardt College
Pink Fight on Again!
The pink fight is on again!
The Reinhardt College Walk Against Breast Cancer Committee will
be hosting the fourth annual Patricia A. Burris Walk Against
Breast Cancer, from 6 p.m. on March 28 until the sun comes up on
Saturday, March 29. The event is held each year in and around
the college’s James and Sis Brown Athletic Center in Waleska,
Ga.
This year’s committee is
planning for at least 200 participants to raise funds and
participate in the all-night walk.
Teams with six to ten people
who have raised $150 dollars are eligible to register, said
Angela Durham, a co-chair of The Walk Against Breast Cancer,
WABC, committee. Tiki torches and luminaries in memory or honor
of someone who has battled cancer will be sold. Teams will also
sell T-shirts, water bottles and pink rubber bracelets specially
designed for the walk to help reach the fund raising goals.
“What’s
inspirational to me about this event is that it was founded by
students to address a critical real-world problem,” said Marsha
White, a Reinhardt staffperson. “Every year teams really show
their passion for this cause. I on a team this year for the
first time, and we’re having a mini bake sale to raise
donations. We’re also selling raffle tickets, tiki torches and
luminaries. Next week we’re going to tie-dye our team
T-shirts. Our team leader is really lighting a fire with all of
us, and we’re on the move.”
The event was founded in
2005 by two Reinhardt students, Jessica Burris and Kelly Hopfer,
with the support of the one of the College’s student
organizations, the Collegiate Music National Educators
Conference. Both students had lost their mothers to cancer.
The annual walk has raised
$26,000 over the last three years. “The goal this year is to
meet what we raised last year, which was $8,000,” said Burris,
who is now an admissions counselor at Reinhardt and is an
advisor to the WABC Committee.
The proceeds are donated
each year to Emory University Hospital’s Winship Cancer
Institute in Atlanta. Burris had a friend with a connection to
the center, so the decision was made to donate the proceeds to
the institute. The money raised has helped fund the study and
research for finding a cure to cancer
When asked what the walk
meant to her, Burris responded as, “Hope. Even in the darkest of
moments there is always hope. The one dollar that you can buy a
Coke with can save someone’s loved one.” Burris also said that
this is a way to bring closure closer.
Though the cause is serious,
the walk itself is a lot of fun. A Mr./Ms. Pageant, kickball,
walking trivia, Halo, Guitar Hero, Rock Band and pie eating
contests are just the beginning of the inter-squad battles that
take place throughout the night.
Justin West, a Reinhardt
senior, has been a walker. "The breast cancer walk is an event
on campus that everyone should attend at least once. It has fun
events for everyone, to help them enjoy their time together and
walk. It serves a great purpose in the funds that they raise.
You can pledge as much money as you want, or you can join the
group that walks all night long."
