Community Invited To Hear
Renowned Pianist At Reinhardt College On Sept. 25, 2007
The community
is invited to join Reinhardt College students, faculty and staff
in hearing pianist Junko Ueno Garrett on Tuesday, Sept. 25,
2007, at 8 p.m. The concert is offered to the public free of
charge. The performance is the first in what promises to be a
rewarding series sponsored by the piano manufacturer Kawai, as
part of the College’s EPIC partnership with the corporation.
“Last year,
Reinhardt was able to become an EPIC partner with Kawai,” said
Associate Dean for Music Dr. Dennis K. McIntire. “In addition
to enabling us to add 34 exceptional pianos to the College’s
teaching and performance collection, the partnership will also
bring renowned artists from around the world to our campus for
performances and masterclasses. Garrett will be a joy to hear,
and she’ll set a wonderful tone for what promises to be a long
and rewarding partnership with Kawai.”
Now living in
Los Angeles, Calif., Garrett is a native of Japan. She has
captivated audiences around the world with her colorful tone,
poetry, expressiveness, dynamic technique, and wide range of
repertoire. She began playing piano at age 3, trained at the
prestigious Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, and received a
Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Rice University. She also
holds a faculty position at Occidental College.
Garrett keeps
a busy schedule, performing on the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s
chamber music series, chamber music collaborations with leading
Los Angeles musicians, faculty performances, and guest artist
appearances. Her recent recital series “A World Journey on the
Keyboard” has been an audience favorite. She also often gives
masterclasses where she performs.
Other recent
engagements include recitals in New York, Boston, San Francisco,
Los Angeles, Washington DC, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City,
Tucson, Houston, and Alaska under the auspices of the Japan
Foundation, Japanese Embassy, and Japanese Consulates General.
In September 2006 under a grant from the Japan Foundation she
performed in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. During this visit,
she received high critical acclaim for her recitals and lectures
on “Piano Journey in Japan: 100 years of Japanese Piano Music.”
In 2008 she will return to South America under the auspices of
the Japan Foundation and Embassies’ culture program.
In 1999 and
2002 she received grants from the Japan Foundation in support of
other South American tours including Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil
and Colombia. In the summers of 2007 and 2005, at the invitation
of the U.S. State Department, Garrett toured in Japan as part of
the Belrose Duo (with husband and Los Angeles Philharmonic
cellist, David Garrett) performing and lecturing on American
music. In 2000, she received “The Japanese Counsel General's
Award” for her contributions to international relations and
understanding between Japan and other countries.
In the fall of
2006, she toured in Japan with “A World Journey on the Keyboard”
program and captivated a wide range of audiences. She has also
toured in India and introduced Western music to Indian
audiences.
Junko has
released two solo CDs, “100 Years of Japanese Piano Music” and
"American Music for Piano." She has also partnered in two piano
trio CDs of Japanese folk songs commissioned by a Japanese
philanthropist.
