The Rev. Michael Selleck, director of connectional ministries,
has been involved in the planning and considers church
leadership as having both short- and long-term ramifications.
"It's not what you have going on at present that proves your
leadership; it’s what is still going on after you have been gone
a year that is the test of your skills. This seminar will be an
excellent opportunity to get the facts on how to best supervise
for impact today and tomorrow.”
The presenter, the Rev.
Randy Coy, was suggested by RMA President the Rev. Dr. Michael
Cash and Reinhardt alumnus, RMA member and trustee the Rev. Dr.
James Mooneyhan. Coy, a distinguished pastor and a former
district superintendent & cabinet member from the Kentucky
Conference, is currently the president/CEO of the Kentucky
United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth. He has led
multi-staff churches, and while serving as Ashland District
Superintendent, he was secretary and dean of the Cabinet and
served on numerous conference agencies. A Kentucky native, Coy
is a second career pastor. He started in the ministry in 1981 as
he served a two-point charge and earned a Bachelor of Arts from
Asbury College. He also earned a Masters of Divinity from Asbury
Theological Seminary.
Coy has spent the past 27
years of his life in pastoral ministry. “I’ve pastored churches
great and small. I’ve worked with staffs of all size. As
district superintendent, I supervised 66 churches in nine
Kentucky counties.” In addition to his practical experience, he
has done extensive reading in the areas of leadership and
coaching. “I believe that one of the biggest needs in the life
of the church today is for an empowered leadership,” he said.
“This leadership should be both lay [church members] and clergy.
However, this leadership can only be at its best when we work
together as a team.”
Coy will address working
with paid and volunteer staff in a climate of limited resources
and a general waning of allegiance to organizations.
Participants will have the opportunity to assess their own
leadership style and the leadership needs of their congregation,
staff and volunteers. He will draw upon studies in leadership
and team building and provide real-world examples. He will also
describe best practices on how to assemble the right people to
lead a church. Informal discussion will give participants
opportunities to share their own questions and experiences.
Participants will learn
about some tools they can use to assess their current leadership
skills. He will also offer a reading list of valuable leadership
resources, both from the church world and the business world.
“I hope that participants will gain some practical skills that
will help them to know when to build/increase staff and then how
to assemble that staff,” Coy said.
