Reinhardt College to Launch Evening Program in Early Childhood Education for Working Adults in January 2008

Beginning in January 2008, Reinhardt College will offer its Early Childhood Education program in another format, one designed especially for working adults.  Interested students in Cherokee, Bartow, Pickens, Gilmer, Cobb, Murray and Gordon counties are encouraged to attend an Open House on Nov. 1 from 6 – 8 p.m. or Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. – noon in the Education atrium, top floor, Tarpley Education Center on Reinhardt’s main campus in Waleska, Ga. to learn more.

The new program, WAIT or Working Adults Into Teaching, is designed for working adults who have completed an Associate Degree in Education from an approved two-year college or technical school. The WAIT classes will meet two nights a week at 6 p.m.. If students enter in January and progress successfully through the program, they will graduate in December of 2010.

Reinhardt officials have gotten an enthusiastic response from the students at North Metro, Appalachian and Coosa Valley Technical Institutes and Georgia Highlands College.  Information has been sent to paraprofessionals working in Cherokee, Bartow, Cartersville City, Pickens, Gilmer, Cobb, Murray and Gordon school districts.  These areas are within easy driving distance for this new program.

Associate Professor of Education and WAIT Program Coordinator Harriett Lindsey has been integrally involved in the development of this new program, and she describes it as “a wonderful way to complete a quality education program as a working adult.”

“As word has gotten out, we have started to gather a list of interested students, but we know others are out there who haven’t yet heard about the WAIT program,” said Lindsey.  “We want to encourage everyone who might be interested to attend an upcoming Open House so we can answer questions and share our excitement. A financial aid advisor, an admissions counselor and academic advisors will be available for consultation”

Price School of Education Dean Dr. Thomas Reed said “the WAIT Program is also helpful because students will be considered full-time which benefits them as many financial aid opportunities are based on full-time enrollment.”

Additionally, classes will be small so students get personal attention from educators who value their experiences. WAIT students will stay also together as a cohort throughout the program.

“The cohort concept is perfect for working adults,” Lindsay said. “They develop close, collaborative relationships that will last long after graduation.”

All classes will be taught on Reinhardt's main campus in Waleska, Ga. The program includes summers and will take approximately 9 semesters to complete.
