Community Invited to Learn about Populism and the Politics of Resentment in Eastern Europe on Feb. 18 at 2:30 p.m. as part of Reinhardt College’s “Year of Eastern Europe and Russia”

As part of Reinhardt College’s Year of Eastern Europe and Russia, the public is invited to hear Dr. Hubert Tworzecki from Emory University present “Populism and the Politics of Resentment in Eastern Europe” on Feb. 18, at 2:30 p.m., on the top level of the Hill Freeman Library and Spruill Learning Center.  This event is offered to the public free of charge.

An associate professor of political science at Emory, Tworzecki will address the political climate in Eastern Europe.  “Almost two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, is the post-communist experiment in democratization a success or a failure?” he asked.  “The news from Russia itself may be grim, but at least the countries of East-Central Europe are generally regarded as democratic success stories.  Still, recent elections in this region have shown a worrying pattern of successes by radical populist parties, whose open disdain for the principles of liberal democracy has reopened the debate about the persistence of authoritarian temptations in this part of the world.”

Reinhardt YEER committee chair, Dr. Anne Good, scheduled the talk to explore another aspect of this complex area.  “We have had talks this year on history, religion and social issues, but we have not had anyone speak directly about recent political issues,” she said.  “His work will be of great interest to our audience.”

Tworzecki was born in Warsaw, Poland and educated at the University of British Columbia (BA/MA 1989) and the University of Toronto, where he received his Ph.D. in 1994. He is the author of Parties and Politics in Post-1989 Poland (Westview Press, 1996) and Learning to Choose: Electoral Politics in East-Central Europe (Stanford University Press, 2002). His current research project is titled "Political Representation and Democratic Consolidation in East-Central Europe."
