Reinhardt College to Commemorate Black History Month during
February 2008
Celebrate Black History Month in February 2008 at
Reinhardt College. From speakers and performers to workshops and
traditional Southern foods, the College will host a variety of
events that honor the rich history and cultural heritage of
African-Americans.
"This is the biggest year for Black History Month
at Reinhardt,” explains Becky Doebler, Reinhardt’s student
activities coordinator. “Black History Month is about
remembering roots and celebrating differences, and with so many
exciting events planned throughout the month, we believe we are
able to provide this to the Reinhardt Community.”
Experience a Performance of Slave
Songs, Games and Dances
A performance by The Georgia Sea Island
Singers on Thursday, Jan. 31, will start off the month-long
celebration. The group, led by Frankie Sullivan Quimby, seeks to
preserve the African-American culture, customs and the songs of
the Gullah language spoken on the isolated islands of the
Georgia Coast. The Quimby family has performed songs and
traditions documented by Lydia Parrish in her 1942 book Slave
Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands for audiences all over the
world. The program begins at 8 p.m. in the Falany Performing
Arts Center (FPAC). Tickets are $15 for adults; and $10 for
seniors (55 and older), students and Reinhardt faculty and
staff. For tickets, call the Performing Arts Center box office
at (770) 720-9167, or visit
www.reinhardt.edu/fpac.
