Considering a Career in
Photojournalism?
Come Hear a Lecture on the Craft at Reinhardt College on Sept.
13, 2007
Join with
Reinhardt students to hear professional photographer Stanley
Leary present "Photojournalism: Could This Be My Passion?" on
Thursday, September 13, 2007, at 3 p.m. in the Community Room of
the W. Frank and Evelyn J. Gordy Center at Reinhardt College in
Waleska, Ga. This event is offered to the public free of
charge.
Dr. Pamela S.
Wilson, Reinhardt’s program coordinator for communication, is
hosting the colloquium, and she describes Leary as impressive.
Wilson got to
know Stanley as he taught photojournalism as an adjunct
professor at Reinhardt. Because of his enthusiasm and passion
for his profession, she was inspired to create a forum for Leary
to share his wealth of personal and professional experience with
communication majors, all interested Reinhardt students and
others from the community.
Now a
freelancer who shoots all over the world, Leary began telling
stories with photography more than 20 years ago. He seeks to
use his skills to help others. Introduced to photography and
photojournalism by an uncle, his work has appeared in Newsweek,
Business Week, Sports Illustrated, Wired, Chicago Tribune, NY
Times, World Book Encyclopedia, Information Week, Popular
Mechanics, Technology Review, Atlanta Journal and Constitution,
and many other publications.
Leary was born
in Kinston, N.C. With a father who was a minister at an
orphanage, Leary grew up with thirty-some young boys and a
couple of hundred other children near by. Seeing his parents
reaching out and helping those children has had a major impact
on his life.
People
watching has long been one of Leary’s favorite hobbies. Driven
to understand people better, he earned a Bachelor of Science in
Social Work from East Carolina University. During college, he
worked for the newspaper, yearbook, and public relations office.
After
graduation, he further honed his photojournalism skills at The
Hickory Daily Record (Hickory, N.C.) and then the Southern
Baptist International Mission Board. After learning for the
Mission Board’s outstanding photojournalism staff for five
years, he earned a Masters of Arts in Communications from the
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. His studied theology
and education and stretched his mind and compassion even more
for people. After completing his masters, he started work with
Georgia Institute of Technology as a photographer, a position he
held from 1993 until April 2002.
He now
freelances for many different clients including Georgia Tech.
Black Star took on Leary as one of their photographers; he
shoots their clients all over the world. Also, WireImage
syndicates Leary’s sports photos to such well known outlets such
as Sports Illustrated, ESPN.com, Athlon Sports and others.
Leary enjoys
new challenges. His natural knack with computers and his
interest in technology and specifically computers has taken him
into web design and image database consulting.
He and his
wife, Dorie Griggs, have three children. She recently earned a
master of divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. She sees
her ministry to be with journalists.
