The Reinhardt Community Constructs 35-Foot Bridge to Cross Moore Creek on College's Multi-Use Trail
Student volunteers include (from left): Thai Cromer, a freshman from Stone Mountain, Ga.; Jonathan Garcia, a senior from Campinas Sao Paulo, Brazil; Jessica Larson, a senior from Thomaston, Ga.; Lindsay Bradley, a senior from Dunnellon, Fla.; and Buckley Wheeler, a senior from Woodstock, Ga.
The Reinhardt community recently joined forces to construct a 35-foot bridge that crosses Moore Creek on the College's system of interconnected trails, which offer gorgeous views and excellent terrain for mountain biking, hiking and running.
Twenty-five volunteers, including College students, faculty, staff and alumni, local community members and SORBA (Southern Off-Road Bicycling Association) members, worked to prepare the building site by clearing paths to and from the bridge and by setting the bridge's foundation. Lumber was pre-cut and transported to a prep-area where trusses were assembled and then mounted to the foundation. After both trusses were installed, the flooring was hammered into place and side railings were attached. The project took more than six hours in one workday to complete.
Volunteers Were Vital
"Overall, it was a large team undertaking that could not have been completed without the help of volunteers," said Buckley Wheeler, a senior business major from Woodstock, Ga. and Reinhardt's outdoor coordinator. "It feels good to know I helped build something that is so permanent. Long after I graduate from Reinhardt, I can come back and show others the bridge that I had a hand in building."
Partnership With SORBA
This fall, the College partnered with Southern Off-Road Bicycling Association (SORBA), a non-profit organization which represents the off-road bicycling public in the Southeast, for the purpose of enhancing the development, publicity and use of the College's trails. The trails are open to the Reinhardt community, as well as to the public. The trailhead is located on Grady Street beside the James & Sis Brown Athletic Center, and parking is available in the athletic center parking lot.
