The Jason Gamel Blue and Gold Spirit Award was recently presented to Dr. Ronald Akers, assistant professor of physical education, in recognition of his spirit and pride for Reinhardt College.
"The social activities that take place here [Reinhardt] make students, faculty and staff all feel like a part of the Reinhardt family," said Akers. "That's why I have so much pride for the College."
Presented annually during the College's Homecoming festivities, the award recognizes a faculty or staff member who best shows their pride for Reinhardt College through athletic events, student activities, campus involvement, and representation of Reinhardt spirit as Jason Gamel '96 did during his time as a student and staff member of the College. The selection process for the award's recipient is by nomination from the campus-at-large, and then the nominations are compiled by the Student Government Association Executive Board and voted on by the Student Senate.
Along with his spirited nature and pride for the College, Akers more than 30 years of experience in physical education keeps students on their toes. He currently teaches courses at Reinhardt on tennis, dance, and teaching physical education to elementary and high school students.
Energetic and Enthusiastic
"Dr. Akers is very energetic and enthusiastic in the classes he teaches," said Chelsea Curtis '07, a former student of Akers. "He encourages students to enjoy his classes, and he has just as much fun in his classes as we do."
Akers earned his bachelor, master and doctoral degrees all from the University of Alabama. He currently resides in Douglasville, Ga.
