What qualities make a successful leader? At the 2009 Reinhardt College Leadership Conference, students will learn new information and skills on how to serve as excellent leaders in school and in their future careers. The conference, which will be held Friday, April 17, 2009 from 12:30- 5 p.m. in the Bannister Glasshouse of the Hasty Student Life Center, will feature speakers from prominent Atlanta-area companies and organizations, breakout sessions on specific servant leadership topics, and opportunities for professional networking.
"I think that from this conference students will gain a better understanding of how to relate their leadership skills to real-life situations," said Nicki Varsel, a junior business major from Gainesville, Ga. and one of the students who developed the conference. "They will also learn many new methods of how to handle leadership challenges that might come along the way."
The conference will begin with keynote speaker Randell Trammell, state executive director/CEO for the State YMCA of Georgia., as he addresses students on how to be better leaders and motivate others for a more effective team. Trammel is a 2003 graduate of Reinhardt College, and he will receive his master of business administration from the College this May.
Two breakout sessions will give students a chance to choose what areas of leadership they want to learn more about. Each session will be in an interactive small group setting and lead by a business or education professional, including Chris Dupree, director of sales for The Coca-Cola Company and Reinhardt trustee; Dr. Katherine Hyatt, assistant professor of business at Reinhardt; Matthew Pinson '05, director of development for major gifts for the Candler School of Theology at Emory University; and Leigh Ann Williams '04, third-grade teacher at Ball Ground Elementary School and parent advisor to sensory-impaired children at Georgia Pines.
Student-Designed and Developed
The Leadership Conference was entirely designed and developed by six Reinhardt students for their course Business 409 - Introduction to Project Management. The students, Jason Mobley (from right), a senior from Rocky Face; Stephen Elder, a junior from Woodstock; Varsel; Andrew Hise, a senior from Marietta; Chris Williams, a junior from Loganville; and Jason Harmon, a senior from Canton, planned all aspects of the conference from the format of the sessions to the selection of the speakers to the decision of what food to serve. The course professor, Tina Bossel (far left), instructor of business, served as a mentor for the students and helped in the event coordination.
"Reinhardt's Office of Student Activities initially approached our class and gave us the opportunity to plan the entire event, which coincides with the objectives of our project management class," Varsel said. "We collaborated on all of our ideas for the format of the conference and then implemented those ideas into the project ourselves."
During the actual event, the student team will also work to coordinate the registration and sessions and will make sure all goals and objectives for the event are achieved.

To participate in the conference, students must be nominated by a faculty or staff member and have demonstrated leadership, work ethic and positive qualities in the classroom. More than 100 students have already been nominated and have registered to attend.
