Convocation of Artists and ScholarsReinhardt College Convocation of Artists & Scholars Showcases Scholastic Achievement in Academics and the Arts

Reinhardt's best student-minds and talent will convene the week of April 13 for the College's Convocation of Artists & Scholars. The schedule of events will include music recitals, a day-long student research conference, a student-teacher portfolio exhibit, student art and science exhibits, a play performance and a leadership conference. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend this unique scholarly event.

Celebration of Artistic and Scholarly Achievements
"The Convocation of Artists & Scholars is a celebration of the artistic and scholarly achievements of our students," says Dr. Wayne Glowka, dean of arts and humanities. "We want to show off our high achievers as models for emulation by staging events in a central location in and around the Bannister Glasshouse [of the Hasty Student Life Center]."

Monday, April 13
Convocation events begin on Monday, April 13 with a student art exhibit of student art from 9:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. in the Bannister Glasshouse of the Hasty Student Life Center. The exhibit will be on display until Wednesday, April 15. That evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Falany Performing Arts Center, the Reinhardt College Symphony Orchestra will perform its spring concert. Under the direction of Dr. David Gregory, associate professor of music, the orchestra is comprised of Reinhardt students and local community members. Tickets are $2 for reserved seating and can be purchased at www.reinhardt.tix.com.

Tuesday, April 14
On Tuesday, April 14 from 6- 9 p.m. in the Bannister Glasshouse, creative student, faculty and guest writers will present their best creative writing work. Faculty will read at 6 p.m., followed by students at 7 p.m., and then guest writers at 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, April 15
During a Research Conference on Wednesday, April 15, a select group of students will present their best academic research papers. The conference, which will be held in the Bannister Glasshouse from 9 a.m.- noon, will include presentations on topics from ethical standards in business to discrepancies in the Beowulf battle report. Following the conference, a recital in the Falany Performing Arts Center from 12:45- 1:30 p.m. will showcase Reinhardt's skilled student musicians.

At 7:30 p.m. that evening, students in the College's theatre program will take the stage at the Canton Theater in Downtown Canton for a dramatic performance of Medea. The play will run until Friday, April 17. Tickets, which are $5 for students and $10 for adults, can be purchased at the theater box office. Thursday, April 16
On Thursday, April 16, a group of education majors will showoff their outstanding portfolios, which include select work and projects created in their education courses at Reinhardt. The portfolios will be presented from 9 a.m.- noon in the Bannister Glasshouse. A science poster exhibit will follow from 1- 3 p.m., also  in the Bannister Glasshouse, and will showcase student work in sociology, psychology, and the various areas of science. The day will wrap up with a lecture by William M. Switzer, MPH, an educational speaker from the Centers for Disease Control, who will speak about  the "Emergence of Novel Human Retroviruses: Preventing the Next Pandemic."

Friday, April 17
The Convocation will conclude on Friday, April 17 with the 2009 Reinhardt College Leadership Conference. The student conference, which will be held from 12:30- 5 p.m. in the Bannister Glasshouse, will feature speakers from prominent Atlanta-area companies and organizations, breakout sessions on specific servant leadership topics, and opportunities for professional networking. To participate in the conference, students must be nominated by a faculty or staff member and have demonstrated leadership, work ethic and positive qualities in the classroom.

"Reinhardt does indeed provide a caring learning environment, but it also provides significant academic challenges for students who show a passion and a talent for scholarly and artistic achievements," says Glowka. "The Convocation of Artists and Scholars will show how our best students have responded to those challenges."
