While celebrating its annual Senior Day on Saturday, the Reinhardt University softball team, which is ranked 21st nationally in the NAIA, claimed its second straight outright Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season championship with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Bryan College Lady Lions at Ken White Softball Field. Reinhardt won the first contest 7-1 and the second 8-0 in five innings to extend its current winning streak to a school-record 12 games.
In between the two contests, the Lady Eagles seniors – Morgan Basone, Cali Lovett and Nicole Rice – were honored as part of Senior Day. Rice was unable to attend because of an injury suffered in a game earlier in the week.
In the first contest, Reinhardt scored once in the bottom of the first inning before Bryan tied the contest in the second. The Lady Eagles pulled away with four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
Reinhardt tallied nine hits while the Lady Lions had just one. Bryan made the game’s only error and left one runner on base. The Lady Eagles stranded four base runners.
Offensively for the winners, Haley Williams was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Kelsey Floyd ended 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Andrea Thibaudeau also had two hits in three at-bats with a run scored while Lovett hit a solo home run and scored twice. Nikki Roddy went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, two RBIs and pair of runs scored.
In the pitching department for Reinhardt, Maddie Monroe tossed all seven innings for the win. She recorded nine strikeouts with no walks over seven innings.
With two runs in the first inning and three in the second, the Lady Eagles raced out to 5-0 lead in the second contest. Reinhardt scored once in the fourth inning and twice in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the eight-run mercy rule.
The Lady Eagles outhit their guests 9-3 and neither squad made an error. Reinhardt left eight runners on base and the Lady Lions four.
Thibaudeau finished 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs to pace the Lady Eagles while Betsy Lawson was 2-for-2 with a triple, walk and two runs scored. Basone added a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored and an RBI while Roddy doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored another.
Reinhardt’s Floyd pitched a complete-game shutout in notching the victory. In five innings of work, she struck out three.
The Lady Eagles are 34-8 overall and 12-0 in the AAC while Bryan drops to 6-36 overall, including 4-8 in conference play. Reinhardt’s AAC doubleheader against the Tennessee Wesleyan College Lady Bulldogs in Athens, Tenn., has been moved from Monday at 2 p.m. to Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Lady Eagles’ non-conference twinbill at the Young Harris (Ga.) College Mountain Lions, originally slated for Tuesday, has been cancelled.
