New! Cherokee County Retired Educators Association Presents
Scholarship Funding to Reinhardt
Cherokee County Retired Educators
Association president Anne Coffman ’65 (right), and
past‑president Susan Hughes (left), present Reinhardt College
President Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood, with a $500 scholarship check
to be awarded to a local Reinhardt student who is pursuing a
career in teaching.
"A goal of the CCREA is to
encourage local students to become educators," said Coffman. "We
hope that by presenting this annual scholarship, more Cherokee
County students will have the support they need to meet their
educational goals."
Reinhardt Celebrates Graduates from
Successful Pilot Program in Education; Program Paves Way for College’s
New Evening Program in Education
Cherokee County schools just got out for the summer, but a group of
Reinhardt College’s recent graduates are already gearing up for the new
school year to begin. Twenty parapros graduated this spring from the
College’s Price School of Education (PSOE) Parapro Program (Alternative
Teacher Certification Program) and all have secured teaching positions
in the county and will teach students in their own classrooms this fall.
Parapros serve to support the classroom teacher in
providing educational opportunities for each student. Their
responsibilities include, but are not limited to: conducting small group
or individual classroom activities based on lesson plans developed by
the teacher, assisting in the supervision of students, and preparing
materials for lesson instruction.
“I am very excited about the 2008-09 school year,” said
Deborah Wallace, a Canton resident who finished the year as a parapro at
Liberty Elementary School but will begin teaching EIP—Early Intervention
Program, designed to serve students who are at risk of not reaching or
maintaining academic grade level—at Arnold Mill Elementary School this
fall. “Reinhardt has given me the tools I need, as well as the
experiences in the classroom, to be an effective and successful
teacher.” Read

England Award for Faculty Excellence

In
April 2007, the Jane C. England Award for Faculty Excellence was
presented to Ms. Harriett Lindsay, Professor of Early Childhood
Education and Director of Field Experience for the Price School of
Education at Reinhardt College. Ms. Lindsey has been a professor
at Reinhardt for over 30 years and has been a tremendous asset to the
college. Her bright personality and optimism have helped the Price
School of Education develop and nurture positive relationships with
teachers and administrators in the Cherokee County School District.
When not teaching or facilitating field experience for PSOE students,
Harriett spends as much time as possible with her granddaughter, Zoe.
Ms. Lindsey has also recently started working on her doctorate degree.

Goizueta Scholarship for Education Student
In
August 2005, Nallely Zuniga found herself at Reinhardt with the
assistance of the Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund. For this Mexico
City native and her family, it was a dream come true. “My mom was so
proud and so happy for me. This was a dream of hers to see us go to
college,” Zuniga said.
The Scholars Fund was created by a $500,000 grant Reinhardt College
received in 2004. The grant endowed The Goizueta Foundation Scholars
Fund to provide need-based scholarship assistance for Hispanic/Latino
students whose families currently reside in the United States, with
preference given to education majors.
“These organizations make it possible for students who excel in
academics to have an opportunity to explore the option of college a bit
further, with some available funds,” said Sousa, assistant director of
admissions. “Opportunity, in one word, summarizes what this scholarship
means.”
Nallely is a perfect candidate for the
scholarship. She came to the U.S. from Mexico with her mother, Leonor,
and three siblings, and they have made a life in Ellijay for the last
six years. The children quickly became a part of the school system, and
both Nallely and her brother Antonio have also worked at a local
restaurant El Rey. Nallely describes her family as “very close” and
every evening the family comes together to “talk about our day, what we
did — they are a great support for me.”
Zuniga wasted no time getting involved at Reinhardt. She has maintained
a full course load with a 4.0 grade-point average while commuting back
and forth from Ellijay and working part time. She has also been active
in the Latino Student Union as the vice-president and writes for the
student newspaper. During the summer, she will serve as an Orientation
Leader helping new students in their transition to Reinhardt.
“Nallely Zuniga is the model student for the Goizueta Scholarship. Not
only is se distinguished by her academic track record, but her list of
extracurricular activities makes me wonder ‘How can she manage it all?”
said Sousa.
“It’s hard work and a lot of papers, but I love it,” Zuniga said of her
first year of college.
