Dr. Thomas F. Madden will
deliver a lecture on the Fourth Crusade. He is a professor of
history and chair of the department of history at Saint Louis
University. He is an internationally recognized scholar of the
history of the Crusades, with a special focus on the Fourth
Crusade (1202 -1204. During the Fourth Crusade the majority of
the body of Crusaders (Frankish Knights and Venetians) were
diverted from their goal of recapturing Jerusalem in the Holy
Land, and instead they besieged and conquered Constantinople,
which was at that time a Christian city.
Most modern Americans have a very limited understanding of
the history of the Crusades and of the particular conflicts and
mentalities that fueled this early conflict between Christian
Europe and the Muslim states of the Middle East. Dr. Madden will
review this actual history, then review how the Crusades are
remembered in the West and in the Middle East. This approach,
one that combines history and recent memory, will enhance the
audience members' knowledge about the Middle East, as well as
help us explain the roots of (and perhaps the solutions for)
modern clashes of culture.
Dr. Madden has published numerous works about the Crusades,
Venetian history and the 12th Century including: The New
Concise History of the Crusades (2005) and The Fourth
Crusade: The Conquest of Constantinople (1997) - a History
Book Club selection.
This lecture is cosponsored by the Year of Middle East, the
Reinhardt History Program, and the history-related student
organizations at Reinhardt. For more information on
