Dr.
Jay Hakes will lecture on U.S. reliance on Persian Gulf oil and
the challenges of modern energy policy on Thursday, Nov. 9,
2006, at 4 p.m. in the Fincher Visual Arts Center at Reinhardt
College, Waleska, Ga. As part of the College’s year-long
emphasis on the issues, religions and peoples of the Middle
East, the public is invited to attend free of charge.
Hakes will explore U.S. energy
dependence from a historical perspective. He will look at the
situation in the U.S. as a result of decisions made decades
ago. He will also examine current actions that will have
important impact, for good or ill, for decades to come.
Hakes’ expertise comes from his
service as the administrator of the Energy Information
Administration, the independent data and analytic arm of the
U.S. Department of Energy, a position he held for most of the
1990s. During that time, he supervised most of the federal
government's energy data collections, analysis and long‑range
energy trend projections. He also directed studies on how long
world oil supplies would last, the status of the oil reserves in
Alaska, and the costs of the Kyoto Treaty on global warming. He
testified about energy issues before congressional committees on
26 occasions and briefed major officials throughout the U.S.
government and around the world. During those years, he was
referred to in the press as "the government's chief energy
analyst."
Dr. Kenneth Wheeler, an associate
professor of history at Reinhardt, is coordinating the visit.
“Dr. Hakes has such expertise, and it’s drawn not only from
academic study but also from his work inside two presidential
administrations,” Wheeler said. “His lecture represents an
opportunity to hear someone with knowledge far exceeding your
average talking head on television. I expect that everyone who
attends his lecture will come away greatly enriched.”
Now the
director of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, a
position he has held since June of 2000, Hakes continues to
speak on contemporary energy issues and the modern presidency.
He has combined both interests in his research on the formation
of energy policy during the Nixon, Ford, and Carter years and is
also writing a book tentatively titled The Quest for Energy
Independence: From Nixon to Carter. He will also speak to a
Reinhardt history class earlier in the day.
Formerly a
professor of political science at the University of New Orleans,
he holds a doctorate in political science from Duke University.
He left academia in 1977 to join the Carter administration in
Washington. In addition, Hakes has held governmental posts with
the staff of Florida Governor and Senator Bob Graham.
The Hakes lectures are the last major YOME events planned for
fall 2006. |
