Diploma de Espanol Lengua Extranjera (DELE) at Reinhardt University

Reinhardt University is proud to be an Examination Centre for the Diploma de Español Lengua Extranjera (DELE).  The examination is created and administered worldwide by the Instituto Cervantes, with headquarters in Madrid, Spain. In the United States the branch of the Instituto Cervantes for which Reinhardt has been named a “satellite” center for the purposes of offering the DELE is the Instituto Cervantes of New York.  The University will begin offering the exam in the 2014 cycle. These exams are scheduled annually for May, August, and November and the dates may not be adjusted.

Proficiency Levels:

The DELE, the levels have been renamed and, to a certain extent, revised to correspond to the levels designated by the Common Framework for Languages developed by the Council of Europe and the European Union. Instead of “basico, intermedio, superior” the levels are now A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2.

The proficiency levels established by the Common Framework of Reference for Languages correspond, although not exactly, to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

Novice Low-Mid                   =    A1

Novice High-Intermediate     =    A2

Intermediate Mid                  =    A2

Intermediate High                =    B2

Advanced Low                      =    B1/B2

Advanced Mid                       =    B2

Advanced High                      =    B2+

Superior                               =    C2

Distinguished                        =    C2

You can find a complete description on the Council of Europe web page where the entire document can be downloaded.

The advantage of this particular exam and the corresponding exams in other EU languages is that the certificate earned is recognized internationally and does not expire. The other advantage for secondary school students is that there is an exam at the B1 level especially tailored for high school students rather than people working in a professional context. These exams are given only in May at the present time.
