Water Walk

On November 2, 2010 Reinhardt University SIFE team held a water walk on campus to help raise awareness to the many blessings we have with having fresh running water and the many needs that Africans face in collecting water on a daily basis.  Reinhardt senior, Melissa Blumer, was the project manager.  She asked that each participant carry at least 2 gallons of water for a mile.  Some of our students actually carried 5 gallons of water, which equals 40 lbs.  Melissa’s research found that African women walk on average of 3 miles daily carrying 40lbs of water for their family.  Often that water isn’t clean because of the lack of wells in Africa.  Melissa encouraged the campus to give up bottled waters and soft drinks for a week and donate the money to the club’s fund-raising campaign.  The SIFE team began a fundraising campaign on campus to sell bracelets to help raise money to help build a well in Africa.  They were able to collect $400 to send to an organization that helps put wells in impoverished areas of Africa.  The team’s efforts helped provide clean water to those in need and helped raise awareness of the water issues in Africa at Reinhardt University.
