HISTORICAL SKETCH
In 1916, the Alumni Association of the School of Music at Northwestern University appointed a committee to consider the feasibility of installing an honor society in the field of music to provide recognition of student academic achievement. As a result, Pi Kappa Lambda was granted a charter by the State of Illinois in 1918. The first member was Peter Christian Lutkin, Dean of the School of Music at Northwestern University. His initials in their Greek equivalents were selected for the name of the Society: Pi Kappa Lambda. Key number one of the Society was issued to Dean Lutkin. The organization has continued to expand since that time. Election to membership in Pi Kappa Lambda indicates superior attainment in music combined with the personal qualifications of someone who is an outstanding exponent of the art. Pi Kappa Lambda is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.
