Dr. Ann D. Smith grew up in Yazoo City, Miss., and graduated from the public schools. She attended Mississippi Valley State University at Itta Bena, Miss., and earned her B.S. in Social Studies Education and Sociology. After college she taught grades 7 -12 for 10 years in public schools in Mississippi including in the Mississippi Delta prior to attending graduate school.
She graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She earned her M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies Education and a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Educational Leadership. She joined the Reinhardt College faculty as Professor of Early Childhood Education in January 2009.
Dr. Ann D. Smith has found her teaching experience at Reinhardt to be very exciting and rewarding because the students are so talented and excited about becoming future teachers. After all these years of teaching she still finds that her students motivate her to continue to grow and develop as a life-long learner and especially in the area of technology. Her scholarship interest includes diversity in teaching and learning as related to differentiated instruction.
Dr. Smith had many years of rewarding teaching experience prior to her arrival in Georgia having taught in higher education and public schools in Mississippi, Illinois, Tennessee and New Mexico. She joined the faculty at Kennesaw State University where she taught undergraduate and graduate programs in the Bagwell College of Education. She also served in a number of administrative roles including Interim Chair of Secondary and Middle Grades Education, Acting Director of Graduate Studies, Assistant Dean, Interim Dean, and Associate Dean. She retired from KSU in January 2007 after enjoying a very rewarding professional career.
Dr. Smith is married to Donald Smith, also a retired educator with a distinguished career in teaching at the secondary and higher education levels. He, too, returned to his love, teaching, in January 2009. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Talladega College in Alabama. He commutes home on the weekends to Kennesaw where they reside.
They are the extremely proud parents of one daughter, Michelle Smith, who like her parents have a love of learning and books. She is a graduate of Kennesaw State University. Michelle earned a B.S. Degree in French and minor in Creative Writing. She has also completed further study in the masters program in Library Science at Valdosta State University. She also served a bookseller with the Barnes and Noble Company and a Library Paraprofessional at Kennesaw State University. She is a writer and enjoys the arts and exercise. Michelle also resides in Kennesaw.
During their leisure time Dr. Smith and her family enjoy attending such activities as the opera, symphony, museums and theater. She also enjoys reading and especially her professional journals such as Educational Leadership and the Kappan.
