Dr. Richard D. Summers
Professor of Mathematics
"My classes are interactive—I present an idea, and then I am constantly asking the students questions."
Understanding and Applying Math As a student in one of Dr. Richard Summers’ classes, you won’t find yourself sitting bored at your desk.
"I want students to be engaged with and to understand math," said Summers. "I have them work out problems on the board and in groups so that they can get the experience of applying math in the real world."
Helping Math “Click” Once class is done for the day, Summers’ duties as a mentor don’t end. He tutors students in Reinhardt’s Student Success Center 12 hours each week and loves every minute of it.
"When students come to the tutoring lab, they are sometimes frustrated and need guidance," Summers explained. "I break the math down for them, and then we put all the pieces back together; it’s the individual attention from me that helps the math ‘click’ for them."
One of a Kind Students appreciate the time that Summers spends helping them succeed at math. This past spring, he taught a course in the WAIT Program, and the dedication to his students was clearly appreciated.
"The students came to class one day wearing t-shirts that stated ‘Math Rocks,'" he said. "The students also honored me with a plaque and told me that they appreciated what I had done for them in this course. It’s moments like those that make Reinhardt one of a kind."
