Experience a Whole New World!

Beginning in fall 2003, Reinhardt College began to focus much of its programming on a specific geographic area of the world. The emphasized area changes annually.

This focus is intended to promote understanding of varied cultures, businesses, histories, geographies and faiths and to help internationalize the Reinhardt experience.

Spring 2009 Speakers and Events

February 19, 3 p.m.
Foundation and first century of the city of Constantinople
Upper Level of the Hill Freeman Library & Spruill Learning Center

Oliver Nicholson, Professor of Classics at the University of Minnesota, will speak on the foundation and first century of the city of Constantinople.
On February 18, Prof. Nicholson will visit Dr. Anne Good's History of the Mediterranean class at 2:30 p.m. and speak about early Christian asceticism - visitors welcome.

Building Houses, Building Bridges: Experiencing the Work of Habitat for Humanity in the Mediterranean

Upper Level of the Hill Freeman Library & Spruill Learning Center
Shawn Reeves and Shala Carlson from Habitat for Humanity International will visit. Shawn Reeves is the capital campaign communications manager for Habitat and has also worked as speechwriter for the CEO. Shala Carlson is an award-winning journalist for Habitat World magazine. Mr. Reeves will speak about his experiences in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon working for HfH.

Todd Harper, Associate Professor in the English Department at Kennesaw State University and specialist in modern Greek literature will speak on a topic TBA.

March 25
Due date for art competition on ancient Mediterranean Goddess
March 27
Pieces go on display and vote is taken to determine winner.

Student Life is planning to host an art project/competition on ancient Mediterranean goddesses (Greek, Roman or Egyptian) for Women's History month. Art submissions of painting, sculpture, photography, pottery, jewelry, costume, etc. will be due on . The pieces will displayed on March 27, and a vote will be taken to determine the winner.

April 13
Malta in the medieval and early modern era

Mark Aloisio, Assistant Professor of History at Colorado State University, will speak on Malta in the medieval and early modern era. As a native of Malta he will also speak about his experiences growing up there.

April 16 - 18
Medea, a modern adaptation of the play, by Kevin Crawford

Kevin Crawford's modern adaptation of Medea (first produced by Northstage in 1998). Medea dramatizes one of the oldest western myths, that of a woman driven to murder by a faithless husband. Set in Greece, the tragedy also presents Medea's struggle, branded as a "barbaric sorceress," to settle into a foreign society. As Kevin notes, "audiences have been both fascinated with, and horrified by, Medea for nearly three thousand years."
