A Much Needed ReminderFebruary 6, 2006As Christians we have the advantage of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us in the way we should go. Because of His awesome Holy spirit we are never alone. What a comfort this is! GOD, investigate my life; get all the facts firsthand. You know when I leave and when I get back; You know everything I'm going to say I look behind me and you're there, This is too much, too wonderful-- Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? If I climb to the sky, you're there! to the far western horizon, You'd find me in a minute-- you're already there waiting! Then I said to myself, "Oh, he even sees me in the dark! It's a fact: darkness isn't dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they're all the same to you. Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother's womb. I thank you, High God--you're breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration--what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I'd even lived one day. - Psalm 139 from Eugene Peterson's The Message Sometimes we just need to be reminded. As we go through life, we often find ourselves asking the question, "Where is God?" We tend to ask this question more when we are going through events in our lives that cause us pain, anger, and anxiety. Psalm 139 was also written in a time of tension. All is not well, so the psalmist yet again sets out to locate God in his life one more time. He discovers that God is not missing, rather God is as present in his life as God has always been. Psalm 139 reminds us that God has not wandered off, rather we have become too preoccupied to notice. God is not only with us along our journey, but God is the source from which we came. By the source we are sustained, but when we are cut off from it, we begin to weaken and lose touch with who and whose we are. We must be connected with our source, God, in order to sustain the journey ahead. The psalm reminds us that God is not far, in fact God is everywhere, encompassing us. God knows our story. God knows us better than we know ourselves. This does not mean that God dictates everything that happens in our lives, but it assures us that God is never far away at any point along the journey.
