EXPLORING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY

Family History and Genealogy Workshop

February 23, 2008 ~ 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Our 2007 Family History and Genealogy Workshop was such a big success that we have planned another one. The 2008 program will include three sessions and will be held in the Funk Heritage Center on February 23, 2008.

Ken Thomas, long-time genealogy columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, will speak.  Also, Valerie Frey of the Georgia Department of Archives and History, who is working on a book combining Georgia food and family stories, will make a presentation.

Because of the popularity of Terry Barton’s program on genetics and genealogy last year, our third session will review genetic testing and its implications for family research.

So, bring your recipes, family stories and questions on Feb. 23rd.

Workshop Registration fee is $17;
you can enjoy a catered lunch for an additional $7

Are you interested in finding out about your ancestors?

In the past ten years, the Internet has exploded with family history resources.  As a result, many people are discovering their roots. The Funk Heritage Center sponsors annual lectures and workshops on genealogy and resources available to assist people in their search for information about their family history. As a result, many area residents have located interesting information through their research and have learned about their heritage.

Websites for online genealogy research abound. Websites that will be helpful in beginning your search are www.genebase.com, www.rootsweb.com and www.genweb.com.

Census information can be found on www.genealogysearch.org and for information concerning ancestors who entered through Ellis Island check out www.ellisisland.org.

Native Americans interested in locating information about their family history will find tribal records listed on www.accessgenealogy.com.

The WorldGenWeb Digital Library (Archives) was developed to present actual transcriptions of public domain records on the Internet. This huge undertaking is the cooperative effort of volunteers who either have electronically formatted files on census records, marriage bonds, wills, and other public documents, or are willing to transcribe this information to contribute. www.usgenweb.org. The Georgia site can be accessed directly at www.thegaproject.org.

People interested in ancestors who lived in Georgia and the southeast may want to check  www.gagensociety.org. Also, The Georgia Office of Secretary of State has a search function  for the Georgia Archives. Go to: www.georgiaarchives.org and from the left sidebar, select "search" and then "search the Archives".

Good luck with your search!
