Reinhardt College Provides Opportunity for Peace Officers to Apply for College Credit
Recognizing the learning and skill acquired in the line of duty and through ongoing training, Reinhardt College will provide Georgia police officers who have completed the Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification the opportunity to petition for up to 15 hours of college credit toward the institution's associate degree in criminal justice or a bachelor's degree in public safety leadership or organizational leadership.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for the men and women involved in law enforcement to earn college credit for their training and life experiences," said Margaret "Peg" O'Connor, Reinhardt's associate vice president for academic affairs.
Students who have successfully completed Basic Certification may apply for college credit for the following courses:
- CRJ 201 Introduction to Criminal Justice,
- CRJ 252 Criminal Justice Administration for Law Enforcement,
- CRJ 253 Constitutional Law for Law Enforcement,
- CRJ 205 Procedures in Law Enforcement and
- CRJ 206 Investigation in Law Enforcement.
Peace officers applying for college credit will need evidence of two years of full-time employment at a Georgia law enforcement agency, evidence of successful completion of Basic Certification, and a letter of recommendation from the applicant's supervisor affirming the candidate's knowledge, skill and success in covering his or her assigned responsibilities, O'Connor said. In addition, the candidate will develop a two- to three-page narrative describing how law enforcement procedures and the laws governing these procedures affect the work and performance of a police officer.
