Reinhardt University has been in existence and in continuous operation since 1883. In 1883, A. M. Reinhardt asked the North Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church for help in establishing a school to provide the basic instruction in the liberal arts. The Conference chartered the new school. Reinhardt Academy, as the school was then called, provided instruction for all ages and grade levels and a curriculum designed to train teachers and ministers. The academy gradually evolved into a privately-supported two-year college and was accredited to offer associate degrees as a Level I institution by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1953. In 1994, the Commission on Colleges accredited Reinhardt College as a Level II institution, and that same year, the school awarded the first bachelor degrees in business administration. In the fall of 1997, three new bachelor degree programs were offered in the areas of biology, communication, and liberal studies. The institution again expanded to include bachelor degree programs in psychology and fine arts in the fall of 1999. Presently, Reinhardt University offers over 40 undergraduate majors.

In 2007, SACSCOC approved the first graduate program, a Master of Business Administration and in 2009 the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Early Childhood Education was added. Then in 2010, Reinhardt College became Reinhardt University. In addition to the MBA and MAT, the university added two additional graduate programs in the last five years: a Master in Public Administration (2013) and a Master of Fine Arts in Creating Writing (2016).

As of Fall 2016, Reinhardt University enrolled 1,484 students with 356 newly admitted first-time freshmen. Student enrollment remained fairly consistent in the last five years, reaching a record high enrollment in Fall 2016. [1] Admission trends also show increasing number of inquiries, applications, admits, and enrollments for the past five years. [2] Longitudinal data on enrollments by degree programs depict a robust growth of the four-year degree programs. [3]

Two hundred seventy nine students graduated from Reinhardt University in the 2015-16 academic year. For undergraduates, the greatest portion of graduates in the 2015-16 academic year came from the following five bachelor’s degree programs: Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Early Childhood Education, and Organizational Management and Leadership. [4]

As part of its strategic plan, Reinhardt plans to launch three new Bachelor’s degree programs in the next two years (History Education, Nursing, and Cybersecurity). These additions are expected to positive and sustainable enrollments.
