Lehigh Carbon Community College

Reinhardt University launched a Campus Bench Campaign to add benches throughout the University’s beautiful campus with its first dedication ceremony on May 25, in memory of Donald (Don) F. Stevens.

Family of Don Stevens

The campaign provides opportunities for family and friends, with a donation of $5,000 or more, to place a bench in memory and/or honor of someone special, forever celebrating them. Donors can select a special location to place a bench on campus with the Office of Advancement, creating a meaningful place for visitors to relax, reflect, and reminisce while enjoying the incredible views that Reinhardt offers.

The inaugural bench dedication was “In Memory of Our Devoted Friend” Don Stevens, an outstanding community leader, a friend of Reinhardt University, and patron of the Falany Performing Arts Center (FPAC).  Don was the former Board Chair of Cherokee Bank and past Chair of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce. As a retired pilot with Delta Airlines, Don was also very active with the Cherokee County Airport Authority.

Don and his family–wife Lila, daughters Janet (Kurt) and Kelly (Larry), and son Keith (Carolyn)–were also very close to Dr. Falany and his family, often traveling and camping with them. Don and Lila attended many shows at the FPAC and enjoyed all that Reinhardt has to offer. To honor this close relationship and Don’s commitment to the FPAC, the bench was placed close to the Falany Performing Arts Center overlooking beautiful Lake Mullinex.

Attended by nearly 40 friends and family, the crowd was greeted with opening comments from Thomas J. Yannuzzi, Ph.D., Interim VP for Advancement & Community Engagement, a spiritual message from Josh Garner, Coordinator of Spiritual Life and Service,  and the formal dedication from President Mark A. Roberts, Ph.D.

Following the formal ceremony, many stayed to share stories about Don and the significant impact he had on their lives and throughout the community. Through much laughter and many tears, memories of his kindness, fellowship, and concern for others were shared with all. He is missed and will be forever remembered.

Dr. Yannuzzi notes “the Campus Bench Campaign is a thoughtful way for donors to commemorate others – past and present – and honor their contributions to our world. They [the benches] are a fitting addition to Reinhardt’s lush, 525-acre campus, and serve as a reminder to enjoy and reflect on the beauty that surrounds us”.
