Dr. Joe Mullins holds a variety of titles at Reinhardt University, and this year he was recognized for the role he plays in changing students’ lives through education.

At this year’s Evening of Honors, Mullins was honored with the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher Award for his encouragement and service to students, as well as his fellow faculty members.

“I was surprised and honored to receive the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher Award,” said Mullins. “It’s always nice to be honored for doing something that you love, and I love to teach.”

Mullins, who serves as program coordinator for Sport Studies and the new Master of Science in Sport Administration and Leadership, played a key role in helping Reinhardt develop its new Quality Enhancement Plan, “Where in the World RU Going?” which encourages students to engage in high-impact practices such as study-abroad trips, internships, research and service-learning. As Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), Mullins also oversees and certifies that all student-athletes are eligible to compete in athletics, a position in which he was awarded FAR of the Year by the Appalachian Athletic Conference for 2018-19.

The United Methodist Exemplary Teaching Award, which is supported through the United Methodist Church, was established to highlight excellence in teaching and service in higher education.

According to Provost Mark Roberts, Mullins earned the honor because he “exemplifies excellence in teaching and service in higher education, demonstrates civility and collegiality, shows concern for students and colleagues, and illustrates a commitment to a values-centered education through service to students.”

Kelly Horton, instructor of sport studies, admires Mullins’ ability to speak words of wisdom into any situation. She nominated Mullins for the award because he “has the innate ability to discern the needs of others” and knows how to respond to those needs.

“Students and peers feel at ease with Joe,” said Horton. “His advice is sound and greatly appreciated, and his work ethic and desire to continually improve is much admired.”
