Citing Sources

Citing Sources

An important part of any research paper is citing sources and formatting.  The library staff is available to assist with MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Association), and any other style.

Another useful, valuable resource is Purdue OWL.  This website includes all of the citation styles and formats for the latest editions of MLA and APA, plus Chicago Manual.  Access the Purdue OWL Research and Citation Resources website.

Arts and humanities students will most often use MLA in their coursework; sciences (including social science) will use APA.

An important caution about using instant citation tools or web sites

There are many web sites out there which advertise instant formatting of sources.  Beware of these as often the results are incorrect and professors will notice the improper formatting.  The best method is to learn the citation style you will most frequently use; repetition is often the best way to learn this.
