In celebration of the final day of classes on April 16th, Reinhardt University seniors gathered outside the Fred H. and Mozelle Bates Tarpley Education Center to ring the Tarpley Bell. Laughter and joyful chimes echoed across campus as students took turns pulling the bell rope and marking the moment with photos, hugs, and cheers. The bell-ringing tradition serves as both a symbolic close to students’ undergraduate journey and a spirited beginning to final exams. It began in 2022 with students ringing the bells of the Bratton Memorial Bell Tower, and transitioned to the Tarpley Bell two years later.
The Tarpley Bell itself carries sentimental value. Its dedication in Fall 2023 celebrated a cherished gift from Reinhardt nurse Gwen Chambers (RU-1984) and her sisters, Dr. Sharon Pappas and Gina Mitchell (RU-1978). Their donation honored their mother and Fred Tarpley’s sister, Cora Belle Tarpley Holcombe (RU-1951).
Ringing the Tarpley Bell has also become a custom for new students following their induction ceremony, as each one joins the Reinhardt University community. Positioned at the steps of the Tarpley Education Center, the Tarpley Bell now rings to chime in celebrations of beginnings and endings.
