Reinhardt University is commemorating Black History Month in February 2019 through a month-long series of events featuring a trip to the King Center, film screening and performances that celebrate the many accomplishments and the proud heritage of African-Americans.

“Reinhardt University celebrates Black History Month to honor the many achievements and contributions made by African-Americans to the economic, cultural, spiritual and political development of the U.S.,” said dean of students Dr. Walter May.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, students will ride the Eagle Express to the King Center in Atlanta and enjoy lunch and fellowship at Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Interested students can sign up by scanning the QR code on flyers around campus or on the Student Activities Council Facebook page. Assistant dean of students Jamie Johnston said the Office of Student Activities and the Student Activities Council opted to use rich resources offered in the metro-Atlanta area, including the King Center, to immerse students in an experiential learning environment.

“By visiting the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Reinhardt students will gain a better understanding of Atlanta’s rich civil rights history. Dr. King left the powerful impression with his desire for transforming the society for a positive good,” May said. “By visiting the King Center, participants will be able to immerse themselves in the civil rights and nonviolence activism experience. They will be able to reflect on what they learned and where we need to go in the future.

“Experiences such as these create opportunity for open dialogue which can lead to a better understanding and appreciation for the experiences of others as we all try to make positive contributions to our larger society,” May said.

On Monday, Feb. 18, SAC is hosting Eagle Cinema in the Rec Room at 7 p.m. Students will view the film “42,” which depicts the integration of American baseball. The movie, named in honor of the number Jackie Robinson wore, follows Robinson’s entry into the then-all-white baseball league. Following the screening, students will discuss the influence of athletes on black history.

A showcase highlighting Reinhardt students will culminate the Black History Month celebration in the University Theater Feb. 28. A partnership between the Student Activities Council and the School of Performing Arts, the showcase will include student performances of dance, jazz, song and spoken word, followed by refreshments.
