The sun was shining and all had a great time at Bent Tree Golf Course in Jasper as the 24th Annual United Methodist Golf Outing set a record for more than two decades of fundraising efforts for Reinhardt University students.

Nearly 100 people participated in the May 17 event that provides for student scholarships.

“Since its founding in 1883, Reinhardt University has worked to apply the principles and teachings of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Our annual United Methodist golf outing makes possible essential scholarship support for students from United Methodist churches, thanks in large measure to the support we receive from UMC clergy and church members. We are humbled and exceedingly grateful to all who helped raise more than $32,000 for our Hagan Scholarship for UMC students,” said Tim Norton, vice president for advancement and marketing.

“The day was a huge success and I would be remiss if I didn’t give great thanks to our committee and chairman, David Melton, and the wonderful people at Bent Tree,” said Dale Morrissey, director for development and external relations at Reinhardt University. “Every year, the response to this fundraising effort for student scholarships is incredible, and we hope that commitment to student scholarships increases as we move forward each year.”

The overall winners for the golf outing (low net team score) are: in first, Ron Flowers, Paul Phillips, Jay Hodges and Van Williams; in second, Fred Crain, Greg Meadows, Bob Fallgren and Lee Wilson; and in third, Mark Franklin, Ray Manus, Pete Rapelye and Ken Rice.

The top three low gross scoring teams are: Mitch Henson, Bob Holfels, Charles Scott and Dewey Edison (first); Dennis Stowers, Rocky Hendrix, Rodney Hannah and Wes Latimer (second) and George Weaver, Robbie Eaton, Zach Dobson and Chip Stewart (third).

Bobby James had the longest drive of the day, and Larry Adams took the most accurate drive title. Tom Bethel won the putting contest held before official play began. Four players got closest to the pin on Par 3s: Alan Tarr (No. 4), Lanier Dasher IV (No. 7), Kyle Garrett (No. 13) and Tommy Thompson (No. 16).

Through events like the Annual United Methodist Golf Outing, Reinhardt University is able to award more than $9 million in institutional aid for its students. With a record fall enrollment of nearly 1,500 students, Reinhardt University is thriving and continues to seek ways to help students earn a quality, liberal arts education.
