A degree from Reinhardt University’s School of the Arts (SOTA) can prepare you for many careers, such as performance, public education, church music, higher education, and private teaching. Perform

Be part of the 20% of Reinhardt’s student body who sing or play an instrument in one of Reinhardt’s ensembles or perform in our acting troups. All music majors perform on mid-semester or end-of-the-semester recitals. Junior and senior level music majors perform half and full recitals. Music theatre and theatre majors perform a senior show-case show.

Concerts

At Reinhardt you will have access to a wide array of concerts throughout the year. Falany Performing Arts Center (FPAC) include international prize-winning performers, performances by student ensembles, faculty and student performances, and general interest programs.

As a performing arts major, you will work closely with professors and students both outside and inside class. The Falany Performing Arts Center, (FPAC), will truly become your home away from home. You’ll learn as much in conversation and in practice as you do in the classroom.

Music and Theatre Students: Application and Auditions

Important Information: Application and Auditions for All Music and Theatre Majors and Minors

Thank you for your interest in applying to the School of the Arts at Reinhardt University. As a prospective music or theatre major or minor, you need to follow the steps below to be considered for admittance into the School of the Arts. Please read all information regarding the application and audition process prior to submitting materials.

Required for all prospective music and theatre major and minor students:

Submit Application: Apply to the School of the Arts here.
Schedule an Audition: The Audition will be in front of members of the music faculty. Evaluations are based on technical and musical proficiency. Eligibility for competitive scholarships is determined at the audition.

Audition Requirements

Instrumental Audition Requirements:

Prepare a “lyrical/song-like” etude or short (3-5 mins) solo, and the same in a more “technically-demanding character, similar to the two etudes learned for district honor band (DHB)/all-state. You may use the DHB/all-state etudes even, but more preferable are standard, accepted etudes for saxophone such as the Ferling, Klose, Teal, Lacour, etc. We also may hear some major scales (all 12 are preferable).
Audition length is not strictly dictated in terms of minutes, but for a music major or minor, the length of both the lyrical and technical audition pieces should both be satisfactory in fully demonstrating the student’s ability in both styles. You should not need to exceed 5 mins. or so for each, but most importantly should provide the audition panel a basis to make an assessment of your playing skill and potential. However, do not cut down the audition material so as to not make “musical sense,” such as stopping mid-phrase for the sake of time, for example. Usually, a complete etude or entire section of a solo sonata is sufficient.
Also, please be prepared to be interviewed by the faculty and to take a written music theory placement test. This test is purely for class placement purposes, it will not impact on your audition or scholarship opportunity.

Voice Audition Requirements for Performance, Music Education (Choral Emphasis), and Sacred Music
Please note: Using a pianist is required, and one will be provided for your audition. Electronic & CD accompaniments are not permitted. Please provide sheet music.

Two contrasting selections (memorized), one selection preferably in a foreign language
- Choose from: 17th-21st Century art songs and/or arias from standard secular or sacred repertoire in English, Italian, French, German, or Spanish
Music Theory placement test. This test is purely for class placement purposes, it will not impact on your audition or scholarship opportunity.

Musical Theatre Audition Requirements:
Please note: Using a pianist is required, and one will be provided for your audition. Electronic & CD accompaniments are not permitted. Please provide sheet music.

Provide an 8×10 headshot
One full musical theatre song and 16 bars from a contrasting piece (memorized) Both should be musical theatre pieces.
One 1-minute monologue (one dramatic or one comic)

Performing Opportunities

The School of the Arts offers many opportunities for music and theatre students to perform in recitals, concerts, and stage productions.

Music majors perform for faculty as the end-of-the-semester exams for their private lessons.
All music majors have opportunities each semester to perform a solo as part of a general student recital.
Performance majors perform a junior and senior recital.
Music Education and Sacred Music majors perform a senior recital.
Music Theatre and Theatre majors perform a senior showcase.

The Concert Choir, Chorale, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble present concerts each semester at the Falany Performing Arts Center. Chamber ensembles perform on student recitals and are featured as pre-concert music during the annual Reinhardt Christmas Concert series. Theatre productions are held in the Reinhardt Theater.

The Falany Performing Arts Center

The School of Music at Reinhardt University is housed in the Falany Performing Arts Center. You will enjoy attending classes, practicing, performing, and socializing in the “FPAC,” a state-of-the-art facility which opened in 2002.

This facility also serves the University and the community as a center for artistic expression through the varied concerts, performances, and events it hosts each year. The FPAC is a premiere cultural center in North Georgia. Audience members and artists are impressed by the building’s architectural beauty and the concert hall’s acoustical brilliance. The lovely Ken White Atrium is floored with local marble and houses two historic pianos from the region.

Pianos – In 2007, the School of Performing Arts became a Kawai EPIC school with 34 state-of-the art pianos placed in studios, classrooms, practice rooms, and on the stage of the concert hall.
Concert Hall – The exquisite 360-seat auditorium features a “tunable” stage. Its acoustics can be modified by moving the wooden stage towers, the ceiling panels, and the curtains to complement the soloist, small ensemble, or orchestra. Because of its fine sound quality, the concert hall is an exciting place to perform.

The Reinhardt University Theater

Recently completed, the Reinhardt University Theater is home to the Reinhardt University Theatre Program. The complex boasts a state-of-the-art Black Box theater with seating capacity for ca. 200 patrons. The flexible seating arrangement allows for directors and designers to create proscenium, three-quarter, and theater-in-the-round performance spaces. The theater is equipped with the latest lighting and sound technology.

The Music Teachers National Association

The Reinhardt University Collegiate Chapter of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) is a group of students interested in private teaching, performing, and networking with other students across the nation. The Reinhardt chapter also provides an important opportunity for students to contribute to the future success of the music profession by joining with over 24,000 music teachers and collegiate members nationwide and by providing meaningful musical experiences and education for the college community and community at large.

The Reinhardt chapter of MTNA was organized in 1994. Activities include monthly meetings, service to the community, such as performing at nursing homes, attendance at art events off-campus, fund-raising activities, and the annual trip to the Georgia Music Teachers Association State Conference, which members can attend free of charge.

The National Association for Music Education

Music allows us to celebrate and preserve our cultural heritages, and also to explore the realms of expression, imagination, and creation resulting in new knowledge. Therefore, every individual should be guaranteed the opportunity to learn music and to share in musical experiences. The National Association for Music Education is to advance music education by encouraging the study and making of music by all.

Pi Kappa Lambda

The Society of Pi Kappa Lambda is the only Reinhardt University honor society in music, and is so recognized by its membership in the Association of College Honor Societies. Since its establishment more than eighty years ago, Pi Kappa Lambda has consistently adhered to the principles of its founders in honoring scholarship, musicianship, and personal character. Chapters of the Society annually extend invitations to membership in Pi Kappa Lambda to the highest ranking students from junior, senior, and graduate classes. The elections are the responsibility, as well as the privilege, of a Faculty Committee representing all of the active members of the Chapter.
