In honor of Veterans Day on November 10, 2025, retired U.S. Air Force Colonels Tom Prior and Quentin Thomas spoke to students, staff, and faculty in Reinhardt’s Jewell Bannister Glasshouse during a special version of the leadership development program RU Leads. During their talk, the veterans described how their leadership roles taught them to recognize the contributions of those who support their missions.

Col. Prior described how he revitalized morale among maintenance crews when Saturday missions became routine. He guaranteed one Saturday each month as a day off, emphasized the national importance of their intelligence flights, and built pride, driving a streak of consecutive on-time takeoffs. “We went from a squadron that was falling apart, to one where the maintenance staff had tears in their eyes when a streak was broken – all because we did a good job of communicating effectively.

“I believe in the four key elements of honesty, competency, inspiration, and forward-looking,” stated Col. Thomas. “I took pride in what we were doing and how we were doing it, and I took pride in everybody else’s job and their dedication.” He recalled leadership advice that still resounds, “Greet employees as they arrive and wish them well when they leave. Go to the dining hall and find an individual sitting by themselves and have breakfast with them. Before too long, they’ll find out that you’re human and they’ll start telling you things, which helps you lead more effectively.”

Josh Garner, Reinhardt’s Director of Student Development, served as event moderator. He asked how serving in the military shaped their view of sacrifice. Both distinguished colonels responded with praise for the unwavering support from military families. Garner concluded by stating, “On behalf of the Reinhardt community, thank you. We are forever grateful for the service and sacrifice that you and your families have made for our country.”

Two days earlier, on November 8, Reinhardt recognized veterans and active-duty service members who attended the Eagles football game. U.S. flags lined the walkway, military personnel received complimentary tickets, and student leaders passed out support buttons to all who entered the stadium. Fans showed their support when the announcer asked veterans to stand and be recognized, followed by Samantha Roper (RU-2028), a music major, singing the national anthem. The beautiful day concluded with a Reinhardt victory and a strong sense of gratitude across campus.
