Amicalola Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) donated $5,000 to the Reinhardt University Food Pantry this week, their second contribution since 2020. A check was presented to Reinhardt at the main Amicalola EMC office in Jasper, Georgia on Thursday.
“As a component of higher learning, we value education and the health of our students. We want to ensure their physical and mental health needs are taken care of so that they can focus on their education,” says Sarah Lowe, Student Health Center assistant. “No student should ever face food insecurity, and we are here to help each student succeed! That is why the Amicalola EMC donation is vitally important! All funds go directly towards helping students overcome issues such as food insecurities, travel restrictions, physical limitations, financial hardships, and will assist students who remain on campus during extended breaks when access to food is limited.”
Lowe says the donation will help the Food Pantry expand its offerings of perishable food, frozen meals, canned items, can openers, hygiene products, grains, pastas, clothing, school supplies, and sanitizer. She adds that the Food Pantry will also start making meal bags.
“Amicalola EMC is happy to partner with Reinhardt Food Pantry to address a critical need within their student population” according to Todd Payne, CEO of Amicalola EMC. “We applaud Reinhardt on recognizing the need exists and taking steps to provide free, healthy and nutritious food to those students in need.”
The donation comes from Amicalola EMC’s unclaimed capital credits. Amicalola EMC is a non-profit organization owned by its customers, also known as members. Any excess revenue of the organization is returned to its members in form of capital credits. Capital credits that remain unclaimed by members after five years are available for distribution to the communities served by the EMC. State law dictates that the money can only be for education, economic development, and 501(c)3 charities.
Thank you Amicalola EMC for your generous donation to the Reinhardt Food Pantry!
