Reinhardt University’s Department of Public Safety maintains our campus as a safe place to live, work, and study. The department, led by Director Jay Duncan, is staffed with officers who are certified and trained in law enforcement through the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Council.

All Reinhardt Public Safety officers are deputized by Cherokee County Sheriff, Frank Reynolds, and their roles are many. They are first-line responders, and have the power of arrest on University-owned and controlled property. They patrol campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and they also provide safety, awareness and educational programs to the Reinhardt community.

The Public Safety Officers are integral members of the Reinhardt community and go beyond tasks of the day. They are occasionally called to assist in the community when there are needs close by, as they monitor Cherokee County Sheriff’s Dispatch. And they support faculty, staff and students with varied requests, from participating in student events, speaking on panels and in classes, and providing information for student assignments.

Duncan praises his staff, “Our Public Safety officers are among the most professional that I have been around in all my years in law enforcement. They believe in Reinhardt’s mission and play a vital role in the development of our students. Working on a smaller campus affords officers the ability to build relationships and form a partnership with the University community. Because of these relationships, we are able to maintain a safe campus.”
