October is disability awareness month. Students in Professor Tami Smith’s education class, EDU 329 (Exceptional Children in the Classroom), exemplified the Reinhardt values of Learning, Serving, and Leading throughout this week. They set up tables and provided handouts and valuable information to increase awareness of ADHD, dyslexia, autism, and vision and hearing impairments to help students understand each disability and its varying severity. This EDU class explores the best methods of inclusion for students with a variety of disabilities or handicaps.

An exhibit of Andy Meridith’s work went on display in the Fincher Art Building, also coordinated by Smith’s students. Meredith is a current student with an impressive talent for photography. It is worth a visit through October 16th.

The week concluded with the Cherokee County Disability Awareness Games at River Ridge High School. Reinhardt athletes and other students have volunteered for the past six years to assist with this annual event. They run the games, give out stickers, assist the athletes in competition, and have fun! The rewards of helping with the games are reciprocal between Reinhardt Eagles and the participating athletes. It is a day both groups look forward to each year.
