Over thirty students and faculty from Reinhardt attended career-minded workshops, listened to captivating concerts, and participated in networking events at the annual Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) Conference from January 30th through February 1st. The three-day event in Athens, Georgia assembled music educators and students who plan to pursue careers in the musical arts from across the State.
Reinhardt Director of Choral Activities Jacob Augsten’s presentation, “Fostering Student Leadership in Choral Communities,” attracted a full audience. Hayden Laney (RU-2026), who had worked on a research project to co-present with Assistant Professor of Music George Blankson presented solo at the poster session after Dr. Blankson was unable to attend. Their presentation was titled “Coping Mechanisms for Performance Anxiety in College Music Students.”
“It was a very exciting experience to have people from around the State asking me questions about a project that I have been working on relating to music education,” Laney elaborated. He added, “I have attended GMEA for the last three years, and it has always been very helpful and inspiring to hear from other music educators. I am very thankful for this opportunity.”
“GMEA was not only enjoyable but also very enlightening,” said Joshua Adams (RU-2027). He found inspiration by attending performances. “Hearing them made me want to work harder and achieve that great sound. It also showed me that my major (music education) is not just for me, but for the students I will someday get to work with. Having the opportunity to go to GMEA reminds me that what I am working for will pay off once I get to see my future students’ faces when they feel the joy that comes when their hard work finally pays off.”
